While cities such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai are modern metropolises with progressive visions, they still retain much respect for local traditions and culture. Various locations around Abu Dhabi and the UAE tell the stories of the past and priority has been given to rediscovering the local history through activities and developments such as archaeological projects, building restoration, museums and indigenous wildlife parks.
The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage is actively preserving and promoting the heritage and culture of Abu Dhabi. Traditional artisans, calligraphers and craftsmen and women are encouraged to develop their skills and prevent traditional ways from disappearing. Artefacts and tools from life in past, including those used in pearl diving, fishing and dhow building are being carefully preserved and displayed. Bedouin ways are being remembered and honoured through the aspirations of the people of Abu Dhabi.
